Artist's Comments

Inspired by HeatherHorton [link] and her amazing ability to render fabric in oils.

This is part punishment for messing up the hand on my previous post, and part exploration of how I might paint my wife's pregnancy. If I'm going to clothe her, I'm really going to have to get better at understanding the way cloth folds, so there will probably be a few more studies before any colour starts leaking onto the web :)

Tools: Trusty Virgin Atlantic biro, as always. :)

Reference: the same day as this [link]

Let me know any tips you've got on how to do this, as I'm not sure I'm quite getting it.

it is lovely, when you paint me, I will be naked, but might be nice to lay on some kind of cloth rather than a hard wood floor! :)

I really love this. It is very statuesque, hey and with my swleen ankles at the moment, you could sculpt me too! :) hehehe

LOL. Good call :)

Got to start thinking about that pregnant piece again. Got my confidence back a little, and just realising I work best when there's strong sidelight on the subject. Wanna play around with some lights this weekend?

well yes, I don't want to distupt the creative flow, but how about a wooden sculpture on a concrete plinth???? as the sun is coming up????

I would love to play with lighting.
I am clearing the loft and should be able to find that super powerful light, we can have some fun.
Would like to photograph you :)

Wood? You've seen me try to build that shed base right? Its taken me almost 2 months and there's only 4 planks!!! :D

Well, I certainly appreciate your faith, but in the interests of having a record of your pregnancy some time before Edward has children of his own, I think a few reference photos might be a better start ;)

And yes, you can photo me anytime.

with biro, depending on what type you're using, it can act as somewhere between pen and ink, and pencil. you can get some shading with it as well as being able to add lines and hatches

i think with this one, a variation on the lines is necessary in order to distinguish parts of the clothing, as at the moment, there is nothing that stands out upon first look. as you keep looking at it, the details of the knot become apparent, but often people don't take the time to have a proper look, if u know what i mean

just one thing to mention with the hand, you have to be careful with the shadow, because i think it might have taken off some of the detail that hands have, such as where the joints are. the fingers look a little too straight on the sides, which can give hands a cartoonish look, when most hands aren't actually like that.

so there's my 2 cents. i love drawing in biro, i just think it is a great medium. unfortunately it usually takes too long, and i am not patient enough these days ;)

Interesting points, and well made. Looking at this in light of your comment, I can see exactly what you mean. I need to find a way to vary the stroke style as a shorthand for 'fabric' and 'skin'. Also, that belly could be a lump of plaster for all the delicacy I gave it. Hardly a suitable place to store a baby ;)

The middle two fingers are definitely too straight, and I've no idea why I bordered the nails so heavily. Probably another case of what I know is there, rather than what I see.

Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. I've been having issues reaching dA recently, so was getting my art fix from browsing your website. I really do admire your work :)

aww well thanks... hope you liked my site, i'm pretty proud of it

and i'm glad you took the comments with the spirit in which they were made.. sometimes i'm hesitant to give out constructive criticism cos it can go the wrong way.

as this was a study, just remember the points for next time... its all a process of honing your style in my opinion. and drawing what you see is such a hard thing to do... it takes a while to get the hang of... i still don't know if i have got it... and especially with hands... cos they are all so different :D
