Artist's Comments
Inspired by HeatherHorton [link] and her amazing ability to render fabric in oils.
This is part punishment for messing up the hand on my previous post, and part exploration of how I might paint my wife's pregnancy. If I'm going to clothe her, I'm really going to have to get better at understanding the way cloth folds, so there will probably be a few more studies before any colour starts leaking onto the web Tools: Trusty Virgin Atlantic biro, as always. Reference: the same day as this [link] Let me know any tips you've got on how to do this, as I'm not sure I'm quite getting it. |

Got to start thinking about that pregnant piece again. Got my confidence back a little, and just realising I work best when there's strong sidelight on the subject. Wanna play around with some lights this weekend?

I would love to play with lighting.
I am clearing the loft and should be able to find that super powerful light, we can have some fun.
Would like to photograph you

Well, I certainly appreciate your faith, but in the interests of having a record of your pregnancy some time before Edward has children of his own, I think a few reference photos might be a better start
And yes, you can photo me anytime.

i think with this one, a variation on the lines is necessary in order to distinguish parts of the clothing, as at the moment, there is nothing that stands out upon first look. as you keep looking at it, the details of the knot become apparent, but often people don't take the time to have a proper look, if u know what i mean
just one thing to mention with the hand, you have to be careful with the shadow, because i think it might have taken off some of the detail that hands have, such as where the joints are. the fingers look a little too straight on the sides, which can give hands a cartoonish look, when most hands aren't actually like that.
so there's my 2 cents. i love drawing in biro, i just think it is a great medium. unfortunately it usually takes too long, and i am not patient enough these days

The middle two fingers are definitely too straight, and I've no idea why I bordered the nails so heavily. Probably another case of what I know is there, rather than what I see.
Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. I've been having issues reaching dA recently, so was getting my art fix from browsing your website. I really do admire your work

and i'm glad you took the comments with the spirit in which they were made.. sometimes i'm hesitant to give out constructive criticism cos it can go the wrong way.
as this was a study, just remember the points for next time... its all a process of honing your style in my opinion. and drawing what you see is such a hard thing to do... it takes a while to get the hang of... i still don't know if i have got it... and especially with hands... cos they are all so different
